DEALING
WITH THE PAST PART 1
By
John Museredzo
“Forget the former things; do
not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you
not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the
wasteland”
Isaiah 43:18 (NIV)
Anyone with a call must put all inhibiting
recollections of the past behind. Let bygones be bygones.
The past tends to obscure us from the realities of the power of the calling. For the success of his calling, Paul learnt the principle of forgetting or laying aside every weight (Hebrews 12:1). Our future is greatly determined by how we take and manage our past. Past life; whether it was a success or a failure needs to be handled well.
Many people with great callings went astray
because of the failure to handle their past life. Your calling is greater than
what is in the past. Dwelling in the past can consume and damage our thought process. Incubation of past memories can be bitter and
bind our progress to experience the desired future. The result is annoying
distraction from pursing your calling. This will shift your focus and make it
impossible for us to give attention to that which we are called to. If we are
to be free to pursue our calling unhindered, then leaving behind our past
disappointments and successes, is more than necessary.
Past sin and
hindrances
“Wherefore
seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us
lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us
run with patience the race that is set before us” Hebrews 12:1
The Bible describes sin as the
breaking, or transgression, of God's law (1
John 3:4). It is also defined as disobedience or rebellion against God (Deuteronomy 9:7), as well as
independence from God. The original translation means to miss the mark of God's holy standard of righteousness. Sin is going against, rebelling
and missing the mark of the will of God. Your calling is in the will of God.
As we pursue our callings it is critical that past
sins are forgotten forever. Sins should
never limit us and overpower the passion that is in us for the future. When we
allow ourselves to be obsessed over past sins we
cause unnecessary imbalance and damage our physical and spiritual stamina which
is necessary to the calling. Past sin needs to be resisted as it continues to
come to disturb our pursuit of the calling.
Are you feeling guilty of a past
sin? It is high time you deal with your mentality and grow into a level which
will challenge the past and move on. Don’t be bound and confined by a tendency
to constantly look back and focus on past sins. Many people with callings feel
miserable for the mere reasons of the suffering caused by meditating on their
past sins. People with this problem always analyze the sin, scrutinize it, and
condemn themselves because of it. The result is that they are defeated and no
longer have the power to soldier on. Say goodbye to past sins and embrace the
good future God has planned for you.
For every person with a calling,
one of the biggest reasons of living defeated lives is because of guilt
emanating from past sins. Most
people think they have erred in word or action in their past and this haunts
them. It is important to note that guilt is one
of Satan's biggest weapons against every person with a calling. It wears and tears us down, makes us feel
dirty, soiled and unworthy and this robs of us of our trust and confidence
which are critical in the locomotion towards our callings.
Guilt is a disease which feeds and gains when
people continually dwell and think about how badly they have messed up. The
devil loves to remind us of our past failures so that he will pin us down for
good. When we allow ourselves to fall to this trap, it gives the enemy access
to establish a stronghold in our minds.
If we are to deal with past sins and every
hindrance we need to stop listening to condemnation. Condemnation will weaken
us as far as calling accomplishment is concerned. If
you want to live a life of success as far as your calling is concerned, then
you need to have a conscience freed from the guilt of your past sins (1 Timothy 3:9).
