MISCONCEPTIONS OF LEADERSHIP by John Museredzo

 MISCONCEPTIONS OF LEADERSHIP

a. The Management Myth: There is a misunderstanding that leading and managing are one and the same. Leading is about influencing people to follow, while management focuses on maintaining systems and processes.

b.Entrepreneur Myth: Sometimes we assume that all entrepreneurs are leaders. That is not always the case. Entrepreneurs are skilled at seeing opportunities and going after them. They see the needs and understand how to meet them in a way that produces profit. But not all are good with people. Many find it necessary to partner with someone skilled at the people part of the equation. If they can’t influence people, they can’t lead.
c. The Knowledge Myth: Many a time we assume that those who posses knowledge and intelligence are leaders. Education doesn't not equate to leadership. See the example of scientific researchers and philosophers in universities who can’t lead.
d.The Pioneer Myth: Many people think that anyone on the front line is a leader. But being first isn’t always the same as leading. To be a leader, a person has to not only be out front but also have people intentionally coming behind him, following his lead and acting on his vision. Being a trendsetter is not the same as being a leader.
e. The Position Myth: We tend to think that leadership is the position. It’s not the position that makes a leader, it’s the leader that makes the position .Some individuals think they are leaders when they are not. All it takes to be a leader is to have somebody follow you. If people are not following you, you are not a leader. A church can call you to be a pastor because pastor is a title. The call does not make you a leader. Leader is not a title but a role. You only become a leader by functioning as one. Often leaders don’t have the title.
f. The Charismatic Myth: We tend to think that everyone who is charismatic is a leader. In the case of church issues we tend to appoint leaders who are gifted and talented at the expense of those who may not be charismatic. Leadership and charismatic are different. Preaching and leading are different things
